There is a famous portrait by Stanley Spencer of his wife and their daughter and her dolls, completed in 1937 called Hilda, Unity and Dolls. Both mother and child are very serious and unsmiling; the dolls black-eyed and seemingly empty. Painted in the aftermath of the disastrous split between Spencer and his wife, the painting reflects the ruin and emptiness that awaited him and Hilda’s subsequent mental breakdown. Following in the footsteps of her father, Unity Spencer became an accomplished artist in her own right. In this autobiography she writes about her unconventional childhood, the turbulent relationship with the father of her beloved son John, and her relationship with her father. She has exhibited widely and still teaches painting and printmaking.
