Unicorn Press is proud to announce its fifth title in the seminal In Arcadia series: Vita Sackville-West’s English Country Houses. This book offers a brief history of the English country house from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, and of the people who built and lived in them – from common squires to kings and queens. This wonderful book was undoubtedly written by someone who had a great sense of pride in England and everything it stood for; a morale booster for a British people layed siege to by times of war. Written during the Blitz, a time when entire cities were being destroyed, ‘English Country Houses’ demonstrates a yearning for the safety supplied by the buildings she describes.
Vita Sackville-West was an English author, poet and gardener. She won the Hawthornden Prize in 1927 and 1933. In 1947 Sackville-West was made a Companion of Honour for her services to literature.
